How to Properly Time the Gearbox on an RC Extend-A-Gun

If you’re working on an RC Extend-A-Gun and need to replace the gearbox, one of the most important steps in the process is making sure it’s properly timed before installation. Proper timing ensures that the Extend-A-Gun operates smoothly and accurately once installed.

This guide walks you through what to check and how to align the gearbox correctly before you mount it to your extendable gun system.

When Do You Need to Time the Gearbox?

Every RC Extend-A-Gun gearbox that ships from Task Force Tips (TFT) is pre-timed at the factory. However, if you’re replacing a gearbox in the field, or if it has been manually rotated during transport or inspection, it’s always a good idea to double-check the timing before proceeding with installation.

Tools You'll Need

Just your hands! No tools are required for this procedure.

Steps to Time the Gearbox

  1. Locate the Manual Override Knob: On the side of the gearbox, you’ll find a small manual override knob. This is used to rotate the internal components manually.
  2. Rotate the Knob Slowly: Begin turning the manual override knob by hand. It will take several full rotations before the gearbox clicks into the correct alignment.
  3. Listen and Feel for the Click: As you rotate the knob, pay attention. You will hear and feel a noticeable “click” or lock-in point. This is the internal timing mechanism aligning into place.
  4. Check the Divots: After you feel the click, inspect the divots or timing marks on the gearbox. These small indicators should line up. If they are aligned, your gearbox is correctly timed and ready for installation.

Why Proper Timing Matters

Incorrectly timed gearboxes can cause:

  • Poor alignment with the extendable barrel
  • Inconsistent extension or retraction
  • Increased wear on internal components

Taking just a few minutes to ensure proper timing helps avoid downtime and ensures optimal field performance.

Final Check Before Installation

Once you’ve verified that the timing marks (divots) are aligned, you can proceed with installing the gearbox on the RC Extend-A-Gun. Make sure to mount it carefully and test its function after installation to confirm smooth operation.
