You may not—it depends. Tradition plays a big role in nozzle selection. If your department runs smooth bores, you’ve probably joked about those using selectable nozzles. But every response district has unique needs, priorities, and challenges, influencing nozzle choices based on what works best for their region.

Selectable nozzles are often chosen by departments that need or want variable flow rates or the ability to adjust their nozzle for different fire conditions. In other words, they prefer a crescent wrench over a fixed-size open-end wrench—a different approach, but not a wrong one.

These nozzles are also commonly used by WUI departments, departments relying on static water sources (lakes, ponds, etc.), and those with inconsistent water supplies. For some, adaptability is key to handling the challenges of their district.
