How An Automatic Nozzle Works

In this episode of H2knOw, we will explore how a handheld Automatic nozzle works and why it is a variable flow, constant pressure firefighting nozzle. Because of the nozzles spring loaded baffle, when there is a PDP increase, the baffle moves forward to create a larger opening because you are delivering a higher flow rate. If you decrease the PDP when using an automatic nozzle, the baffle moves backwards to create a smaller opening because you are delivering a lower flow rate.

Depending on the model, the average mid-range handheld automatic nozzle can have the flow capability of a 15/16”, a 7/8”, and a ½” all in one nozzle. Other high-range automatic nozzles can have the flow capability of a 1-3/16”, 1-1/4”, 1-1/8”, 1”, 15/16”, 7/8”, and ½”.

Each nozzle is different and those differences are not necessarily a bad thing. The important thing is to know how the tool functions so you can pick the best one for the way your department operates within the challenges a particular response district.
